[It takes several seconds for Filbo to respond. When he does, it's...it's completely hesitant, like he really, really would have rather nobody to see it]
...it's...something from around five or ten minutes before I died. Haha...just me failing once again, what else.
[Definitely not the trace of the confidence he displayed. The development he underwent during canon was pretty wiped by the utter failure at saving everyone]
I was in an expedition with a friend you didn't see. Those bugs, we came to figure out what we could about those. We didn't...really think we would end wiped out by them a year after arriving.
So, um...where I came from, there's this distant island. There are...creatures there called Bugsnax. Bugs that gave themselves the appearance of food, you know? Haha...pretty descriptive name, no idea where it came from.
[Probably some foolish grumpuses who got wiped out by the insects, really]
So, when you eat one, a part of you turns into the food thing they were mimicking, you know? Can replace a lost limb, can heal your injuries, and tastes better than anything you had before. Really...all positives and seemingly no negatives.
[And obviously, when something is too good to be true, it is]
Well, uh, the doctor and the scientist in our group had done plenty of studies on each other to figure out all there was to know? Lots of exams, and the scientist kinda...
[He inhales before dropping this little tidbit:]
They severed half of one and ate Bugsnax to test its regenerative properties. It worked perfectly.
[...yeah, that one sure was an incident that happened and Filbo really is glad he was so bad at being a test subject they didn't want to deal with him]
...but no matter what they did, they sure didn't catch onto that Bugsnax are parasites. I...think maybe the fact that, uh, the bugs--the bugs dig into your psyche and make you feel like eating them is the solution to your problems had something to do with we just...taking the weird transformations so calmly? I dunno...
[Yeah, the psychological component of the insects' guiles probably had something to do with how everyone was so chill with having foodstuff instead of body parts]
Yeah, we didn't either. The world's full of great things but also of some pretty awful ones, really. Can't say I will forget any of this...even after getting out of hell.
[It's part of why he reacted relatively understanding when Zelgadis spoke of his transformation into a chimera, really. Filbo had been transformed into something else too, he had seen many transformed too...as a concept, it was something he was used to]

So these parasites infiltrated your community and ultimately laid it to ruin... I see. I never would have imagined such a creature would exist.
